Celebrating National Play Day in El Salvador
Instituto Crecer Juntos (ICJ) organized 14 festivals in each region in El Salvador to ensure that thousands of children had the opportunity to participate in the National Play Day celebration, an anual event lasting for one month. Whole Child joined this effort. This is one of our staff member’s experience.

February Updates from Whole Child International
Our team is in the midst of our Protection and Quality of Care for Children project with USAID. Here are a few highlights from our fieldwork.
On Tuesday, December 17, 2019, Whole Child International and UNICEF/El Salvador signed a Letter of Interest (LOI) to coordinate and deliver joint actions to strengthen and improve El Salvador’s National Child Protection System, specifically with regard to expanding the social workforce to ensure the rights of the child are upheld. The signatories on this LOI were Ivette Blanco, UNICEF Representative in El Salvador, and Sonia Silva-Urrutia, WCI’s Country Director and Legal Representative in El Salvador.
El Salvador Fieldwork & De-Institutionalization Report
Our team is in the midst of our Protection and Quality of Care for Children project. Here are a few highlights from our fieldwork.
Recently, our team traveled to Guatemala City with our friends at Project Red to attend the regional ACH (Christian Alliance for Orphans) conference. Presentations focused on topics such as reuniting children from institutional care to families, child trafficking in Latin America, and transitional living services for youth.
First Pres Visits Whole Child El Salvador
The director and two teachers from First Presbyterian Nursery School in Santa Monica, California, paid an inspiring visit to Whole Child in El Salvador. “First Pres” is a renowned L.A.-area preschool that puts into practice many of the principles that our work is based upon; it has trained professionals from around the world in its child-focused approach based in the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy.
Meetings on Espíritu Santo Island, El Salvador
Staff from INSA, the Salvadorian government’s department of child and family services, and Whole Child team members met at sunrise for a two-hour drive from San Salvador to the Port of El Triunfo, in Usulután.
A Formal Agreement with Our Partners at CONNA
Yesterday we were honored to deepen our partnership with the government of El Salvador, signing a memorandum of cooperation with the National Council for Children and Adolescents (CONNA).

Whole Child’s new Mother’s Day tradition — #LikeAMotherToMe — is in its second year! It’s a chance to celebrate the mother-like relationships that reflect the connection we help build between caregivers and vulnerable children. Whether or not people have a biological mother in their lives, but they often have mother-like figures who love them, support them, and champion them.
